Our Environmental Approach
Environmental Stewardship
We prioritize conducting all our mining, exploration, and development activities with a focus on sustainability, ensuring our operations protect and preserve the environment at every stage.
Water Stewardship
Water management is a key aspect of our mine operations and closure strategies. We actively engage with communities of the area areas to understand the impact of our activities on local water resources and ensure we honor their water rights, while also improving water access where possible. Before starting mining, we conduct water baseline studies to evaluate water availability and quality, and we use water balances to monitor site-level water consumption, reuse, and discharge. Our water management systems are designed to meet regulatory requirements, minimize any potential negative effects on downstream water quality, and ensure proper handling of both contact and non-contact water. Additionally, we offer training for employees and contractors involved in water management to promote best practices.
Biodiversity and Land Use
We are dedicated to safeguarding biodiversity and rehabilitating ecosystems in the areas where we operate, ensuring that we avoid exploring or developing mines in internationally protected regions. Our approach focuses on minimizing the impact on biodiversity throughout the life of the mine, with the goal of preserving ecosystems for future generations. We implement a biodiversity conservation system within our environmental management framework, following a mitigation hierarchy that first aims to prevent impacts, and then works to reduce, restore, or offset unavoidable effects. This includes conducting biodiversity and community impact assessments before starting new projects, monitoring species, and initiating relocation programs when necessary. Additionally, progressive reclamation efforts are made to restore biodiversity by rehabilitating areas no longer needed for mining activities.
Energy and Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Our approach to addressing climate change focuses on assessing potential impacts on our long-term business strategy and integrating CO2Eq emission reduction measures into our governance and operational decisions. This allows us to establish realistic and scientifically-backed targets that align with the climate commitments of the countries in which we operate. We are dedicated to reducing our carbon footprint by embracing renewable energy, improving efficiency, and embedding emissions reduction goals into our operations. Our commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050 drives our innovation and aligns us with global climate goals. Our initiatives include conducting ongoing risk assessments to stay informed about evolving physical and transition risks, setting periodic emission reduction targets, investing in grid connections to minimize direct fuel consumption, shifting to renewable energy sources, and advancing projects focused on energy efficiency and the adoption of low-emission technologies.
Tailings Facilities & Waste Management
Our Tailings Management Framework outlines clear responsibilities to ensure the safe and effective planning, implementation, monitoring, and review of essential facilities. We focus on designing and maintaining tailings facilities with robust safety practices, risk management, and emergency preparedness systems, continually aiming to exceed industry best practices. In addition, we adhere to local regulations and industry standards for managing and monitoring the generation and disposal of industrial and domestic waste, working to minimize environmental and community impacts. The Montauban Mine site follows a tailored tailings management system that ensures compliance with regulatory and safety guidelines. We implement best practices during the construction of the tailings facility, using quality assurance procedures to meet engineering specifications. Furthermore, we will have emergency response plans in place and regularly conduct drills to train employees on how to respond to potential tailings facility incidents.
Mine Closure & Rehabilitation
Mine closure planning begins at project inception, allowing us to design sustainable solutions that meet environmental and community needs. By restoring land, addressing long-term impacts, and engaging with stakeholders, we ensure a positive and enduring legacy.
Our waste management strategy focuses on safe design, rigorous oversight, and adherence to industry best practices. We actively work to minimize environmental risks, ensure proper waste disposal, and prepare comprehensive emergency plans to protect both communities and ecosystems.
